L-580 Leader’s Recon

About 80 area commanders and incident commanders from the National AC-IC meeting conducted a “Leader’s Recon” of the L-580 San Diego Megafires Interactive Case Study project.

The development of this L-580 project is a public-private partnership including sponsorship and support by the San Diego Gas & Electric Company,  Barona Fire Department, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, National Wildfire Coordinating Group and MCS.

The “Leader’s Recon” group included law enforcement, U.S. Coast Guard, and fire leaders from local, state, and federal agencies from across the U.S.

Members of the development partnership guided these senior incident managers through several site visits of key locations during the 1956 Inaja Fire and 2003 Cedar Fire.  Each site included guide interpretation by local, state, tribal, federal and private sector leaders, each a key decision maker during the Cedar Fire.

The visits culminated in a presentation hosted by the Barona Fire Department of the Barona Band of the Mission Indians. These included experiences from local fire chiefs during the Cedar Fire and from Sandra Younger, author of The Fire Outside My Window. The book will be part of the pre-reading for the L-580 program.

The site visits are intended to be one component of this L-580 experience which will also include important topics and lessons learned from large, near catastrophic incidents as well as scenario based application exercises for new concepts and tools.

Feedback from the site visits will be used in the continued development of the project.
